5 Axis CNC Machining vs 3+2 Machining
When it comes to CNC machining, there’s a big difference between 5-axis and 3+2-axis machining.
5-axis CNC milling involves constantly adjusting the cutting tool along all five axes. This keeps the tool tip perfectly perpendicular to the part, ensuring maximum precision. It’s like the tool is always “dancing” around the workpiece, making smooth and continuous movements.
On the other hand, 3+2 machining—also called 5-sided machining or indexed 5-axis—is more like a 3-axis program on steroids. The cutting tool is set at a fixed angle, based on the two rotational axes, and it stays there. The problem is, 3+2 machining needs to stop and restart every time the tool needs to be reoriented. That really slows things down.
But with 5-axis machining, you don’t have that problem. It just keeps going and going, which means much faster processing times. Plus, 5-axis machining is way more versatile. It’s great for all sorts of complex shapes and contours that 3+2 just can’t handle.
In short, 3+2 is good for basic plane processing, but if you need something more intricate—like oblique or specialized machining—5-axis is the way to go.

What is 5 Axis Machining?
5-axis machining is a revolutionary CNC technology that moves beyond traditional 3-axis limitations by adding two rotational axes (A and B) to the cutting tool or workpiece. This enables simultaneous movement along the X, Y, and Z linear axes and rotation around them, allowing complex geometries to be sculpted with unmatched precision in a single setup.
From aerospace turbine blades to medical implants and automotive prototypes, 5-axis machining tackles the most intricate designs with ease—reducing lead times, minimizing tool wear, and eliminating costly repositioning. Imagine achieving flawless surface finishes, tight tolerances, and unparalleled efficiency, all while unlocking creative freedom for engineers and designers.
